New at Newport Museum and Art Gallery

Maurice Barnes – an exhibition of works by Maurice Barnes from the collections of Newport Museum and Art Gallery; from 28 April until 14 July.

Recent Acquisitions - Newport Museum and Art Gallery has acquired a number of paintings for the collections over the last few years including works by Terry Jones, Keith Underwood and John Goddard. Come and have a look at some of those works now on display in the Art Gallery.

Exhibitions

The Royal Academy celebrates its 250th anniversary!

Over the years, numerous works by Royal Academicians were acquired for the collections of Newport Museum and Art Gallery and a selection of oil paintings will be on display throughout 2018.

Newport Library, Museum and Art Gallery 50 years in John Frost Square

An exhibition commemorating the opening of the current Library, Museum and Art Gallery building by Princess Margaret on 5 April 1968.

Talks, Tours and Activities

Every Tuesday, 2pm – 3.30pm

Remember when…? Join Museum volunteer Peter Brown and share your memories of living in Newport.

30 May, 11am – noon, noon – 1pm, 1pm-2pm

Family Crafts: Silhouettes, Street Scenes and Landscapes. This workshop will use colour and silhouette effects to help you create your own day or night scene, telling a story from the city or countryside. Come along and be inspired by the street scenes and landscapes from other artists in our gallery. Places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis on the day. Suitable for school age children 4 – 12 years. Please be aware that children must be accompanied by an adult throughout.

Museum & Art Gallery trails for children are available throughout the year.

New at the Museum!

Have a look at some of the Museum’s recent acquisitions – objects donated by the Newport band

‘Goldie Looking Chain’ and the 1990 screen print ‘The Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport’ by Mary Traynor. On display in the Museum entrance area on the 1st floor.

Summer Holiday Family Crafts

Every Wednesday throughout the summer holidays, 11am – 2pm

* 2 August; Make an ancient Egyptian headdress

* 9 August; Make a Roman counting board

* 16 August; Make a woodland animal mask

* 23 August; Make an ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus

* 30 August; Make a paper Newport Ship

Family craft sessions start at 11am, noon and 1pm. 15 spaces are available

for each of the sessions and they are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis

on the day. Please be aware that children need to be accompanied by an adult.

New at the Museum & Art Gallery!

Discovering Ancient Egypt, 13 June to 16 September

A temporary exhibition displaying the highlights of Newport Museum’s Egyptology collection, including finds excavated by famous Egyptologist Flinders Petrie.

[This ancient Egyptian wooden hawk was associated with the god Horus. He was the god of the sky, a symbol of divine kingship, and protector of the pharaoh. Horus was also the god of order and justice and the god of the east and the rising sun. This wooden hawk would have decorated a coffin lid for a burial approximately 2,500 years ago. This is one of the many Egyptian artefacts held by Newport Museum and Art Gallery.]

New at the Museum!

The Newport College of Art: Paintings and Sculptures from the Collections of

Newport Museum and Art Gallery, 29 April until 2018

This exhibition draws on paintings and sculptures from the collections of Newport Museum and Art Gallery, which were created by artists associated with the Art College. Most of them taught at the College and contributed to its success as one of Britain’s leading educational art institutions, particularly in the 1960s and 70s.

New at the Museum!

Come and have a look at the recently acquired watercolour ‘The Newport Ship’ by David Jordan on display in the Museum entrance. The painting shows the Ship being hauled into a side inlet downstream from Newport’s castle. It has been created following extensive research and discussion with the Medieval Sip Project curator and other members of the project’s expert panel.
